The follow-up to 's demented Chinese Fountain, the propulsive City Club does away with the genre-hopping, "beach goth" aesthetic of prior outings, and installs a new, more streamlined foundation that favors punchy synths and a newly funked-up rhythm section.   4. The Growlers bring a interesting and addicting sound with their "beach goth" style. Although a bit more refined (re: produced) in comparison to their earlier works (Chinese Fountain and before), City Club is an absolute joy to listen to/5(35).

If you think the title track off The Growlers' new album sounds a bit Strokes-y, there's a good reason for that: not only is City Club co-produced by Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas, but it's being released on Casablancas' label, Cult Records. With a disco-a-la-Blondie strutting beat and angular, staccato guitar, the song becomes a buzzing-streetlamp lit, urban playground for Brooks.

  7. City Club may not be what fans were expecting, but it's by far the Growlers' most immediate and accessible collection of songs to date. All this publication's reviews; Read full review; Q Magazine. Nov 1, It's a few tracks longer than it needs to be, but City Club is their best collection of songs to date. Dope on a Rope and City.
